Ken Ueno: Sunsets Look to the Future
[Black Ships]
Tall black ships, they have come to harbor
Into my bay, I’ve let him shelter within me
Who am I to question God’s ungodly scale of
devastation
Science whose wrath is great
Greater than God, the great mushroom in the sky
The loop of technology only amplifies the wrath
A loop like a passacaglia which keeps me stuck in the
past
Black ships and Pinkerton are present always
[Song for Sendai]
(There is no use crying
So, I will sing
I will lock up my sadness in my heart
I can see my mother’s face
I can still feel her presence close by
Always stay with me
Like Hachi-ko, I will stare at the sea
Until you come back to me
You said, only the thoughts I carry in my head
Some call them memories, like something nice
You said, but now I’d rather have a sled
Something to hold and remind me of where I’ve been
Another wave, I’d be lost and though I’ve never been
back
It’s nice to know that a home is still a fact
My favorite genius still alive
You said, so like Hachi-ko waiting by a matsu no ki
I will stay here staring at the sea
Until the tide brings you back to me)
(Lyrics by Ken Ueno)
