“Music in Motion—That motion is the gentle rocking of a boat for this series of family neighborhood concerts presented by Bargemusic, the floating barge at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. As always, the material — announced just before the performance — is chamber music, but these programs differ in important ways from the regular Bargemusic fare: With unreserved seating, they last only an hour, include a post-show question-and-answer session with the musicians and are all free.” —New York Times, August 21, 2015

Here and Now Series

Handel in Harlem

“Handel in Harlem” depicts a fictive journey of the famous Baroque Composer G.F. Handel to Manhattan, into our time and our musical world. Historically this trip never took place. It was too dangerous at the time. In this program we explore the possibility of Handel coming to America and joining us here with his creative mind. Handel’s treatment of rhythm and phrasing was indeed very American and many of his rhythm concepts have a hidden off beat quality. His rhythm is much closer to jazz than the more defined, less loose approach by his fellow musician J.S. Bach. This observation leads to the project “Handel in Harlem,” where we hear the music travel freely and swiftly in between the old and new world. As in the time of Columbus this transatlantic trip is not easy and is full of hidden “dangers” and musical adventures. We navigate in uncharted waters and would love to invite you to join us for this special voyage.
